The anatomy of a female dolphin

en_The skeleton of dolphins like other whale species has many similarities to those of other mammal species. The vertebrae, shoulder blade, upper arm bone, ulna and radius and even the hand bones and knuckles are clearly visible. The legs however have all disappeared. Only in some species a little rest of the pelvic bone remained. Note there are no bones in the dorsal fin and the flukes. The inner organs are also much the same. Only the melon, an organ used for echolocation, is unique.

New Teacher's Box: 'What we eat. What we drink.'

en_Nowadays we eat and drink products from unknown plants and animals. Transported by ship and planes. Contributing to the high ecological footprint of consumers in industrial countries and long-lasting implication for people, the environment and the climate. This box offers a variety of 1:1 animals, materials and activities to raise awareness and understanding.

New Species: Banana plant Musa x paradisiacal

en_The banana plant looks like a tree but what appears to be a trunk is actually a structure of tightly packed and overlapping leaf sheaths. Although it is fleshy consisting mostly of water it is quite sturdy supporting a weight of 50 or more kilograms. Most people eat bananas and other exotic fruits almost daily. Environmentally and socio-ethically exotic fruits should be consumed as a very special treat and organic and fair-trade products should be preferred.

New Species: Cattle Bos taurus

en_It takes the birth of a calf for the cow to produce milk. Many consumers of milk products are not aware of this. Today most calves are right after birth taken away and isolated. A cruel action of today's milk producing industry. The Swiss based initiative of Compassion is going a different way: The calves stay with their mothers and are allowed to drink her milk. To consume less dairy products allows to buy animal friendly products.

New Species: Domestic pig Sus scrofa domesticus

en_Worldwide there are about 683.07 Millionen pigs producing the tremendous human demand for meat. These animals are highly intelligent and social. Although bred since many generations, they still show various natural behaviours of their ancestor, the wild boar (Sus scrofa). Behaviours they can't apply as they are held in tiny spaces and in masses.

New Species: Chicken Gallus gallus domesticus

en_As part of the teacher's box "What we eat. What we drink." with various educative materials, the chicken offers an emotional connection to these fascinating birds which are worldwide (mis)used for their meat and eggs. To reduce our consumption of these animal products will not only help the environment and the climate. It will also allow to support movements towards cruelty free and species appropriate farming.

New Species: Jaguar Panthera once

en_The Jaguar, originally also distributed in Southern USA, lives today almost exclusively in Central and South America. Although only listed as near threatened on the IUCN red list, their populations are continuously decreasing, among other reasons, due to the destruction of their habitats such as the rain forests.

World Marine Mammal Conference in Barcelona

en_The world largest conference brought together 2611 scientists from all over the world. During almost a week fascinating insights, new methods, environmental concerns, conservation issues and educational outreach were presented and discussed. I traveled to Spain with more than 20 species in my small suitcase. I was very happy to hang them up at the windows of the Centre de Convencions Internacional. They then became a favourate area to take photos and selfies, to discuss and study and even as ideal reference points to meet.

Art to Communicate Science - Workshop at the SMM in Barcelona

en_The pre-conference workshop 'Communicating Science through Art' was a huge success and highly inspiring as creative, diverse and individually initiated ideas were presented by visual artists, musicians, scientists and educators. I introduced the Project '1:1 with animals' during a presentation as well as a short activity to let the participants experience the beauty and size of marine mammals.
