The Diversity of Land Mammals

Scientists estimate that about 8.7 Million species inhabit the planet earth and 1-2 million are animals. 86% of those living on land and 91% living in the oceans have not been described yet! Today about 5500 mammal species worldwide living in highly variable and diverse habitats on land, in the water and in the air. Of those about 231 species live in Europea. In all areas their numbers and diversity is in decline at alarming rates due to human impacts such as habitat loss, pollution, and overexploitation.
