While whales, dolphins and manatees are fully adapted to live in the water, seals and sea otters return from their foraging trips to rest and mate on land and to raise their offsprings. Because polar bears are living in and from the ocean they are also grouped among the marine mammals.

There are about 15 baleen and 70 toothed whale species while pinnipeds are divided into 19 species.
